About Loughborough

Loughborough University is somewhere anyone can realise their full potential. The atmosphere and team spirit on campus inspire and empower people to achieve extraordinary things. This progressive and ambitious attitude is reflected in the success we achieve, as one of the top performing universities in the country. Loughborough University is also a welcoming place where staff and students should feel they can be themselves. Across everything we do, we are working together to create a better future, for everyone.

We are proud to be one of the UK’s leading universities. Our achievements reflect this. Sustainability

Loughborough University recognises its responsibility to cultivate and empower our staff, students, and partners to create a more sustainable planet for the future. Universities play a leading role in delivering positive environmental impacts and social justice both through the reduction of their carbon emissions and the promotion of their learning. To fulfil our responsibilities, we must embed sustainability in all aspects of our establishment including teaching, research, international impact, partnerships, procurement, and operations.

The new Loughborough University Strategy was launched in 2022. The bold and ambitious strategy “Creating Better Futures. Together” puts Sustainability at the heart of the University’s agenda over the next decade. Climate Change and Net Zero is one of the three key themes within the Strategy and the University is committed to delivering sustainability not just on Campus but through the international impact of our research, education, and innovation. Our new Sustainability Strategy, currently in development, will detail our vision and objectives for a creating a sustainable future for all using our influence in research, teaching, student experience and partnership working.

Loughborough University Net Zero Group.

This new group, created this year, has been established to drive our carbon reduction program.  Chaired by a member of the Senior Leadership Team this group is made up of both operational and academic staff as well students, with specialists in their field but also climate enthusiasts.  The group will drive the zero carbon for Scope 1 and 2 by 2035 and all scopes by 2050 (if not before). The group will consider all aspects of carbon reduction including but not limited to Energy, Travel and Procurement as well as the training of all staff in carbon awareness and/or carbon literacy.

Sustainability and Sport

As a leading University for Sport, we are also leading the way in Sustainability in Sport.  Loughborough University has been a signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action framework since 2019 and the is only the UK based University to have signed up to the framework and its guiding principles. Using its platform as a world leading sports University and home to over 15 sport’s governing bodies, Loughborough actively uses its influence in the sports sector as a tool to drive climate awareness and action among global citizens.
