To encourage more students and young people to become involved in our conference, this year, for the first time EAUC launched our Climate Image Competition.  Invitations were sent to students in colleges, universities and their partner organisations asking them to to express their hopes and fears about the climate through visual art.

We received several entries to the competition and hope that some of the contributors will join us at the event.  You will be able to see some of their work at the conference too. 

Our congratulations to the winner:  Jenna Arnot from Birmingham City University, who has won a free place to attend the conference in 2020.  Her image seen below is entitled: Utagawa Hiroshige’s Naruto Whirlpool 

Jenna made 5 pieces of art work inspired by Japonsim. As she began a project at university about plastic pollution and environmental degradation, she remembered a recreation of Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa made out of plastic and other materials – highlighting the devastating effects of plastic on our marine life, habitats, plant life and even mankind. She decided to create my own interpretation of these pieces using collected plastic bags.  We love the result and her image is now the feature image on our conference logo.

Mention should also be made of our runner up Robert Traynor, who’s two images “Shopping around for Change” and “Sustainable Sense” came both second and third in the competition.  Robert is studying photography at North East Scotland College, at Gallowgate Aberdeen
